Roger Roess

Professor of Transportation Engineering, Polytechnic University of NY

Roger P. Roess is Professor of Transportation Engineering at Polytechnic University, where he has been on the faculty since 1973. Formerly, he held a number of administrative positions at Polytechnic University, including Dean of Engineering and Vice-President for Academic Affairs. He currently serves as Special Assistant to the Dean for Academic Assessment. His principal research area of interest is highway capacity analysis. He has led several important research efforts leading to capacity and level of service analysis procedures for freeways, weaving areas, ramp junctions, signalized intersections, and interchanges. Last year, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award from the Transportation Research Board's Committee on Highway Capacity and Level of Service. Other areas of interest include: public transportation planning, ferry systems; professional training; and engineering education. In the field of engineering education, he has been extensively involved in developing the undergraduate engineering programs and curricula, and has played a leading role in the formulation of Polytechnic's core curriculum for engineering majors. He is Polytechnic's project leader on the "Developing New Paradigms for Engineering Education" project with the GATEWAY Coalition, Engineering Education Centers Program, National Science Foundation. He is the principal author of the text Traffic Engineering (2nd Ed, 1998) and directed numerous transportation projects, the results of which were published by leading professional organizations, such as the Transportation Research Board and the Institute of Transportation Engineers.
