Michael Meyer

Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology

Michael D. Meyer is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and former Chair of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. From 1983 to 1988, Dr. Meyer was Director of Transportation Planning and Development for Massachusetts where he was responsible for statewide planning, project development, traffic engineering, and transportation research, a responsibility that led to numerous planning efforts in Massachusetts metropolitan areas in which induced demand was a critical challenge. Prior to this, he was a professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at M.I.T. Dr. Meyer has written over 140 technical articles and has authored or co-authored numerous texts on transportation planning and policy, including a college textbook for McGraw Hill entitled Urban Transportation Planning: A Decision Oriented Approach. Most recently, he finished Transportation Congestion and Mobility: A Toolbox for Transportation Officials, a book sponsored by the Institute of Transportation Engineers and the Federal Highway Administration which focuses on a large number of transportation and land use actions that can be implemented to enhance mobility. He is an active member of numerous professional organizations, and has chaired committees relating to public transportation, education, and intermodal transportation. Dr. Meyer has consulted with many transportation organizations and has been involved with numerous expert review panels that have advised state and local officials on the most cost effective investment in transportation. These peer review panels have included transportation investment studies in Seattle, Portland, Salt Lake City, Houston, and Atlanta. He has conducted studies for the Federal Highway Administration and the Federal Transit Administration on numerous aspects of implementing transportation actions at the federal and state level. Most recently, he authored a research report for the Federal Transit Administration entitled, Alternative Performance Measures For Transportation Planning: Evolution Toward Multimodal Planning. In addition to this report, Dr. Meyer has participated in consulting projects in California, Florida, Washington, and Georgia that pertain to transportation planning. He is a registered professional engineer in the State of Georgia.
