Biography: Cary Hirschstein is a Master of Urban Planning candidate (2004) and ICIS Research Assistant at the Wagner School of Public Service, New York University. Cary is focusing on environment and infrastructure in his studies, and is active with several student planning groups including the Wagner Environmental Policy Action group. At ICIS, his work has focused on the sustainability of infrastructure systems, and he is co-authoring a paper pertaining to “green” infrastructure proposals for Lower Manhattan. Cary serves as a research assistant for the ICIS component of the South Bronx Environmental Studies project, focusing on water quality in the study area. In addition, Cary serves on the Civic Alliance’s scorecard working group, having produced a model rating system for sustainable infrastructure. He currently manages the ICIS web site and acts as editor of ICIS’s monthly electronic news source, the Infrastructure Informer. In his undergraduate studies, Cary pursued research with faculty examining how housing and resources predict the life quality, physical and psychological health of the local senior citizen population, as well as various design and environmental analysis projects. Upon graduation, Cary worked for a year as a project manager at an educational technology company in Cambridge, MA, where he helped direct the development of the company’s distance learning initiative.
