January 18, 2002 Christine Olivia Uy This chapter describes GIS applications for infrastructure systems that provide educational, healthcare and safety services. Facilities that provide educational services include day care and preschool services, primary and secondary schools, colleges and universities, adult learning centers, and public libraries. The healthcare infrastructure consists of hospitals, clinics, primary care, specialty medical centers, public health services, and nursing homes. Solid waste disposal facilities such as landfills and incinerators are also critical to maintaining health in a community. Safety providers include police and fire departments, emergency medical services, and disaster management organizations.
