Description: While GIS technology has progressed rapidly over the past decade, several opportunities and obstacles have not received the full attention of GIS users. Communication and collaboration, data management, and education are three areas where improvements will allow infrastructure managers and providers to coordinate data collection and funding efforts, provide data standards and guidelines for sharing, and increase the expertise and effectiveness of CIS staff. Without adequate resolution of these issues, GIS implementation may be limited by ad-hoc solutions for acquiring data, implementing applications, and training personnel.
